Magic of Learning: The ScienceExplorers Program

ScienceExplorers Program
The program consists of the following six fully-integrated components:

Lessons
ScienceExplorers offers original science lessons for elementary and middle school Dreamers that provide a readily accessible explanation of science principles and illustrative, hands-on activities that give an experiential understanding of the principles. The curriculum incorporates elements of technology, math, engineering and reading disciplines as well as science.

Dreamers will be fascinated by the science topics, which will include bugs, the solar system, food, sound and rockets. The goals of these lessons are to expose Dreamers to science in action through exhilarating learning experiences and “spark” excitement about learning. The Dreamers will come away from each lesson eager to share what they have learned with their friends and families and looking forward to the next lesson

Field Trips
Science-related field trip are an integral part of the ScienceExplorers program. Dreamers will visit science centers, take guide nature hikes, visit a large construction machine demonstration site and visit a digital dome theater to view the universe.

Real World Connections
Connecting the science lessons to the real world where the students live is an integral part of ScienceExplorers. Dreamers will get to meet science professionals who will introduce a variety of scientific careers and topics. Science-based service learning opportunities and internships will be arranged for interested middle and high school Dreamers with local museums, science centers and other science-related organizations. For example, a group of Dreamers in Washington, DC will work with the Anacostia Watershed Society. In addition to the educational benefits, these service learning experiences will give the Dreamers a tremendous sense of accomplishment and self-worth.

ScienceExplorer Library
The Foundation will provide each IHDF affiliate with a mini-science library of science magazines and award-winning science, technology and engineering books. These libraries will allow Dreamers to explore science topics on their own and foster the general goal of improved literacy. Materials for the library will be selected based on their appeal, quality of science and age appropriateness. For example, the library may include children’s magazines such as National Geographic Kids and Ranger Rick, and books on topics ranging from astronomy and invention to Grossology.

Capacity Building
ScienceExplorers will offer professional development to enhance the capacity of IHDF staff to employ best teaching practices for informal science education. ScienceExplorers’ teaching staff will lead hands-on training sessions for IHAD tutors. The goal of the professional development is to build a cadre of IHDF tutors with the knowledge and ability to sustain informal science activities for Dreamers.

Research Plan
ScienceExplorers will be research-driven to ensure that the program achieves its goals and continuously improves. The launch of ScienceExplorers will be accompanied by a scientifically-based research plan developed by Dr. Mark Harvey, Associate Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Research Program, University of North Carolina-Ashville. The plan will include both short-term and longitudinal studies to measure impact and outcomes, including attitudes about and interest in science.
