Scholars Program III: Science

Science Scholars: 12 4th and 5th graders met twice a month with science educator Glo DeAngelis, formerly the science program director at the Boston Museum of Science and creator of an informal education program that has attracted over 30,000 young people.

Each of our science Scholars has an affinity for science and an excitement for learning and experimenting. Glo explored the fundamentals of physics, astronomy, sound, air, light, and the history of science. She then engaged the Scholars in hands-on experiments to enable them to have a fuller understanding of the lessons’ principles and theories. The science club has been tremendously exciting and enriching for the science Scholars and has provided them with a deeper understanding of their daily science curriculum.

We will continue the science program at Spring Hill in the fall of 2008 with science teacher Alison Bauer, and are exploring bringing the science program to Webb-Wheatley Elementary School in Washington, DC. The science Scholars Program also provided the impetus for our collaboration with the I Have a Dream affiliates.
